Summer Internship

Introduction

This summer I worked full time for Pekin Insurance as a part of their Experience Team, led by manager Josh Brienen. This position was hybrid, splitting my time evenly between working in-office and working from home. I worked alongside another intern, as well as two professional designers. The three main goals of the internship were to create a design audit of the company's current applications, a comprehensive design system, and a template for their Figma design files.

Development

To curate the design audit, I used a Miro board. For the other two projects, the design system and the template, I used Figma. I had prior experience with both of these programs.

Results

The design audit was successful in identifying the inconsistencies in design components. When placed side by side in tables, it was easy to understand the necessity of a design system for Pekin Insurance.

The design system took the majority of my internship to complete. Before beginning, the other intern and I conducted extensive research, including articles, podcasts, and videos, to expand our knowledge of design systems. With support from the rest of our team, we created a design system using the atomic organization method. Atoms, molecules, and organisms represent different levels of complexity in the components.

The Figma template is divided so that each page represents a different step in the design process (brainstorming, in progress, ready for review, etc.). These steps were carefully considered and iterated on so that it would ultimately make the designers more organized, and the files more easily readable to other teams.

All of these projects were a success. Our team was very happy with the results of the projects, and they were shown to the head of the IT department, who also approved.

At the end of the internship, we gave a presentation to the other interns at Pekin Insurance, the HR department, and our team to discuss our experiences during the summer.
